Preliminary Flood Mapping in Aq Qala, Iran, Following Torrential Rain in late March 2019

On late March 2019 extensive flooding occurred due to the torrential rain that hit the northern region of Iran. The Geoinformatics Unit, RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project conducted a preliminary mapping of the flooded areas using earth observation data. The very-high-resolution Jilin-1 sp06 optical image used in this analysis was provided by the Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co. Moderate-resolution Sentinel-1 data also used in this analysis were downloaded from the Copernicus Open Access Hub website.

To detect the detail flood extension in the urban areas of Aq Qala city (red rectangle), landcover classification and object-based operations were carried out on the post-event optical image acquired on March 30, 2019. The flooded zones outside the urban area were estimated using a change detection analysis from the pre-event (March 17, 2019) and post-event (March 29, 2019) Sentinel-1 images. The figure below shows detected flooded areas.

Our analysis result was highlighted on the website of Group on Earth Observations (GEO).
