Preliminary Flood Mapping Following a Dam Collapse in Brazil on January 25, 2019

March 14, 2019

On January 25, 2019, extensive flooding occurred due to the collapse of the tailings dam at the Córrego do Feijão iron ore mine in south-east Brazil. The Geoinformatics Unit from RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project conducted a preliminary mapping of the damaged areas using satellite remote sensing imagery. The satellite imagery used in this analysis were provided by the China Center for Resources Satellite Data and Application (GaoFen-1 sensor) and the SpaceWill Info. Co., Ltd. (SuperView-1 sensor).

To detect the damaged areas, we carried out a change detection analysis based on the landcover classification computed from the pre-event GaoFen-1 image acquired on September 25, 2018, and the post-event SuperView-1 image acquired five days after the disaster on January 30, 2019. The image below shows detected loss areas.

Our analysis result was highlighted on the website of Group on Earth Observations (GEO).
