Preliminary Flood Mapping Following Dam Collapse in Myanmar on August 29, 2018

September 4, 2018

On August 29, 2018, extensive flooding occurred due to the collapse of the Swar Irrigation Dam in southern Myanmar. The Geoinformatics Unit from RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project conducted a preliminary mapping of the flooded areas using satellite remote sensing imagery. The SENTINEL-1 data used in this analysis were downloaded from the Copernicus Open Access Hub website.

To detect the flooded areas, we carried out a change detection analysis using a pre-event SAR data acquired on August 19, 2018, and post-event SAR data obtained two days after the dam collapsed, on August 31, 2018. The image below shows detected flooded areas (blue segments) south of Swar town.
